Seth Godin dropped this jewel of a blog post a couple of days ago – I read it and instantly (mentally) labelled it as “Brilliant!”
but then I didn’t really know what to do with it . . . so I let it sit in my in-box a few days.
Now I know . . . SHARE it in it’s entirety. This is unusual for me because I usually pull excerpts rather than completely re-blogging things. In this case, Seth puts it out there just as it should be.
The Acute Heptagram of Impact
Not as catchy a title as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, but I hope you’ll walk through this with me:
I can outline a strategy for you, but if you don’t have the tactics in place or you’re not skilled enough to execute, it won’t matter if the strategy is a good one.
Your project’s success is going to be influenced in large measure by the reputation of the people who join in and the organization that brings it forward. That’s nothing you can completely change in a day, but it’s something that will change (like it or not) every day.
None of this matters if you and your team don’t persist, and your persistence will largely be driven by the desire you have to succeed, which of course is relentlessly undermined by the fear we all wrestle with every day.
These seven elements: Strategy, Tactics, Execution, Reputation, Persistence, Desire and Fear, make up the seven points of the acute heptagram of impact. If your project isn’t working, it’s almost certainly because one or more of these elements aren’t right. And in my experience, it’s all of them. We generally pick the easiest and safest one to work on (probably tactics) without taking a deep breath and understanding where the real problem is.
Feel free to share the AHI, but please don’t have it tattooed on your hip or anything.
The bold italics are mine . . . When it’s not working, check it against the heptagram and adjust accordingly.
Wonderful timing for this as I prepare for my first Life Rhythm Workshop. Until now, I have been “teaching/Preaching” this Life Rhythm concept in a 3 hour bite of time . . . and have been very aware of the fact that most folks who attended “got a lot out of the session” but didn’t do much with it afterwards.
So – other than feeling good and getting a nice burst of excitement and energy, it was way too easy to return to the grind and continue as before. My “Life Changing” theory flashing in the pan just as so many other “Motivational Success Programs”
How could it be done better?
The Heptagram gives me just what I need . . .
- Strategy – 6 bi-weekly sessions over a 3 month period to create new HABITS
- Tactics – Real TOOLS to keep things on the right track
- Execution – Mastering each of the 6 components in between sessions
- Reputation – Claiming and living up to “Vital Few” status
- Persistence – Never say die approach – Steadfast determination to succeed
- Desire – Clear goals and vision to keep you moving forward with passion
- Fear – Working THROUGH the fear – Honoring it for what it is – a motivator to keep on moving forward
Not bad, eh?
Spend some time with this heptagram, and your life can do nothing but improve
🙂
