Who are you?

I’ve been instructed to answer these questions “online, in public” as an assignment for Seth Godin’s Freelancer Course, so what better place than here?

I hereby invite YOU to follow suit and answer these questions in your public space – and/0r click the link and take Seth’s Freelancer course yourself 🙂

Interestingly, “Who are you?” is the very first question I ask in my own “Life Rhythm Way” course which I offer semi-annually to REALTORS and other Professionals to help them find a more Healthy way of orchestrating their lives such that they have rhythm not chaos thereby managing to accomplish MORE with less effort.

Now, I find this question posed to ME and REQUIRED to be answered publicly . . . So – Here goes . . .

What do you want to do? (Not your job, but your work, now, tomorrow, and in the future)?

I want to help other people succeed and know that, in doing so, I will succeed. I want to do this using each and every one of my natural and learned talents and skills. I’m a story teller, a Leader, an Entrepreneur. an Innovator, and often generous to a fault. I want to do lots of inviting . . . always inviting others to travel with me even if only for a short time. In everything I do, I want to do it with authenticity and integrity. A few years ago, I wrote a personal mission statement which goes a long way towards answering this question:

“I choose to simply and BOLDLY live the FourFold Way in Open Space!”

Who do you want to change, and how do you want to change them?

I think this is a trick question, because I do not believe that I can change anyone other than myself . . . but if I could, here’s who i would change and how. I would change anyone in the world whose life experience is framed by limiting beliefs. We all have “Personal History” which has created a litany of things we “cannot or should not do” . . . I think that’s hogwash. We truly CAN do anything we want to do (have passion for) enough that we are willing to take responsibility through action . . . and I invite all people to recognize and own their personal power. Not enough people consider “WHY?” or “why NOT?” I want to change all the people whose curiosity has been squelched by rote education and/or media fueled society standards and expectations that simply aren’t reality. I invite all people to succeed with all of their own beautiful art.

How much risk? (from 1 [a little] to 10 [bet everything], how much are you willing to put at stake to make the change you seek?

10 . . . I’m ALL IN! Always have been, although I’ve occasionally fallen into the trap of conformity in the interest of “making a living.” This seems to be the rub for most people. We all know what we want to do but can’t seem to be able to make the income we want or need doing that . . . so we settle for joining the mass of men who lead lives of quiet desperation and get a “real job” to sustain us while we use whatever time and energy remains to pursue (part time) our real passion. We justify this by saying that we will work hard now to earn our retirement and we can do the things we want to do then. We can always follow our passion later, right? What happens if you die suddenly? You then cheat the world of the magic the real you would have orchestrated. This is a matter of integrity. Authenticity . . . All in or BUST for me.

How much work are you willing to do to get there? Be specific about tradeoffs.

I’m willing to do whatever level of “work” is necessary, but truthfully this passion stuff is never WORK. Tradeoffs? I have recently declined some potentially lucrative opportunities so as to maintain my path of independence. This has been hard to do at times when I feel the anxiety of financial concerns, and I have succumbed a few times and wandered off the path. Thankfully, I find my way back on course. Other tradeoffs have to do with relationships. Whoever comes is the right people, and the people who are doubters and downers are not the right people. Nothing wrong with Devil’s advocates because those are the ones who help keep our feet on the ground as we work our art. It’s the saboteurs who, for whatever reason (Power, Control, Ego) who we must purge from our path. This is a tradeoff because often these folks are fun to be around. Again – Integrity means doing the right things and inviting the right people and living intentionally.

Does this project matter enough for the risk and the effort you’re putting into it?

YES! I’m 54 years old. Based on the average longevity of my relatives and my relative good health, I’m planning to be among the living for another 40 years. this “project” matters, and I figure I/we can accomplish a LOT in the next 40 years. Worth every minute and trial and tribulation. This work MATTERS to me!

Is it possible – has anyone with your resources ever pulled off anything like this?

I think this is possible, and it is probable that other people are doing and have done what I want to do . . . If not, I’ll be honored to be the first. I figure I’ll die doing this work no matter how long I live. I’ve reached the point of adulthood that I care much less about status and fame and riches and more about “making a difference” . . . having a legacy . . . and doing it consistently and persistently with integrity.
