The Demise of the RSVP

What is the value of an RSVP?

First a definition:

“RSVP is a request for a response from the invited person or people. It is an initialism derived from the French phrase répondez s’il vous plaît, meaning “please respond.”

So . . . You’ve invited a group of people, and you are asking them to “RSVP” for the purpose of knowing who IS coming and who ISN’T coming.

Armed with that information, you can then complete your planning for the event to be sure you have enough seating capacity, food and beverage, printed materials etc.

We all know that some people who say they are coming won’t . . . and some people who fail to RSVP will show up anyway, so it’s always a bit of a guessing game.

I do a LOT of inviting because, in most weeks, I offer 2 educational sessions for local REALTORS and other Professionals. A fairly large percentage of the folks I invite either say “No!” or simply don’t respond. those folks are all good in my book, because it’s only the “Yays” I need to count in order to be properly prepared.

Problem is (Is this a REALTOR thing?), the number of people who show up seldom comes even close to the number of people who RSVP “YAY!”

I’ve seen the wildest swings – 10 say they’re coming and 2 show up . . . or 10 say they’re coming and 25 show up.

Why bother with the RSVP at all, eh?

Is that whole RSVP thing now impotent and meaningless?

When we plan, should we just “wing it” and leave it to chance?

I wonder what goes through the heads of the folks who say they’re coming and don’t?

“No-one will notice if I don’t show up!”

Is this an Integrity issue? I won’t trust your response next time I invite you.

Commitment issue?

Time management issue? Did you RSVP and forget to put it on your calendar?

or has the RSVP gone the way of the public pay phone?

Inquiring minds want to know . . .

and you say?
