Momentum builds as a result of the compilation of many single tasks . . . and thereby often creates the illusion (in the eyes of the casual observer) of sudden and awe-inspiring success. when’s the last time you saw a train sprint out of the station?
“Overnight success” is almost always a myth. Success shows up when the right people following their passion take action over time and build this momentum until the magical moment when the flood gates open and good things start happening “all by themselves”.
Consider a career choice and the 20/80 Principle. When diving into a new venture, a disproportionate number of folks bail out in the first year (The 80%), while the 20% chug along.
Why?
Most folks don’t understand momentum and don’t have the patience and sticktoitiveness to stay in the game long enough build it . . . They are impatient and blame their flightiness on attention deficit . . . or on their “handlers” (the management or the company).
I don’t buy that and believe the REAL reason for early failure is lack of passion. Passion is what carries us through the “slow go” as momentum builds. Passion is what keeps the fire lit.
So . . . If in the first year, the passion isn’t strong enough, perhaps it’s the wrong career. This does not equal failure IMHO . . . It’s simply information – Feed-back!
Time to move on!
In the 3-5 year window from “start”, again a disproportionate number of folks bail out (The 80%), while the 20% chug along.
Things are a bit more fuzzy here because I believe that at this point in time, the passion is probably there and the momentum may be there. The professional may be JUST on the edge of success (The Tipping Point) without knowing it.
I witness this phenomenon often as a Real Estate Broker. There’s this weird, karmic thing that happens when a Real Estate Professional (who really has passion for the career) throws in the towel at the 3-5 year mark . . .
Invariably, Not long after moving on, business begins flowing to them effortlessly . . . creating a magnetic energy that is literally pulling them back.
I believe that when there is true passion (for anything or anyone), absence makes the heart grow fonder.
So . . . Before you quit (ANYTHING), check with your heart first . . . consider your momentum . . . and with respect to Real Estate Professionals, don’t retire that license just yet.
If what’s killing you is expenses (board fees and operating expenses) consider finding a “Reserve Company” (I have one of those here in Nashville called Pareto Reserve) . . . where real estate licensees can move their license to keep it active and have the ability to refer business to other REALTORS and still get paid a referral fee.
If and when the business begins to flow, it’s a simple transfer of the license to an active company (Like Pareto Realty) to dive back into listing and selling houses.
Passion
Momentum
Just sayin’
Best,

PS – Glad it finally stopped raining in Nashville. We were starting to have deja-vu thinking.
