The definition of Invitation

“It’s OK not to come”

Almost everything I do begins with an invitation.

I could reasonably argue that pretty much anything ANYONE does begins with an invitation.

After all, you’re reading this blog post because I invited you by publishing it publicly.

Invitations are often misunderstood.

Sure! They are powerful beyond measure because they are the initiators . . .

Without an invitation, it’s a Solo pursuit . . . yet there’s still an invitation . . . The initiator simply invited herself to engage.

Here where the misunderstand sometimes lies . . . What invitations are NOT:

  • Invitations are NOT COMMANDS!
  • If attendance is required, it’s a mandate and NOT an invitation.
  • When you receive an invitation, you may accept or decline without any expectation of being judged.
  • Invitations are “no obligation required” opportunities to engage or participate.

So . . . should you choose to accept an invitation, you’re committing yourself to show up and be present for as long as your participation is contributing or receiving value.

In the event you determine that the space would improve by your absence, it is YOUR responsibility to move on to a place where you can and will contribute or receive value.

The goal is to be useful wherever you are whenever you’re present with whomever until you feel that it’s over at which point your only obligation is to let go.

All of the above comes honestly from my nearly 30 year dance with Open Space Technology as being WAY more than a cool “Meeting Methodology”

In fact, I’ve learned through the years that it describes the natural way of life . . . and it all begins with an invitation 🙂

I hereby invite you to learn more by watching Phelim talking about his “Improbable Devoted and Disgruntled Road Movie”

PS – I Open Space every chance I get. If you’ve got an organization with a diversity of people – facing real issues – with potential for conflict – and need for quick resolution, I invite you to connect with me . . . Perhaps all you’ll need is some good, old fashioned Open Space.
