Process? . . . Event?

At the end of the day, what happened?

Did you start the day with a plan?

Did the day go as planned?

If not, where did it go awry?

Whose fault is it?

Does it REALLY matter whose fault it is?

If you’re POSITIVE it was someone else’s fault, what part of it might you have done differently as an antidote?

What will you do differently tomorrow to steer the ship back on course?

Could it be that we all tackled a process as if it were an event?

proc·ess

 a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.

e·vent

 a thing that happens, especially one of importance.

Completion of a process requires a culmination of a “series of actions or steps” subsequently resulting in the EVENT of a celebratory CLOSING.

In our collective never-ending quest to maintain relative sanity and forward motion, it’s essential to fully understand the important difference between Process and Event.

This understanding must also be accompanied by a measure of restraint in the throes of the moment of excitement when a spark (GREAT IDEA) ignites the flame of ACTION.

PAUSE briefly!

Ask this question:

“Is this thing I’m about to do a process or an event?”

If process, then keep the game paused long enough to identify steps/phases/action items such that you can prioritize them to put yourself on a defined path leading to the event of CLOSING.

Some folks might argue that in the most technical sense EVERYTHING we do is a process . . . The creative, nonconformists amongst us might disagree (out of sheer principle).

Consider the scenario when you hear that your FAVORITE band is coming to town to perform.

That concert will be an EVENT you don’t want to miss, so you launch the PROCESS of making sure you get there with the right people.

there are things to to do . . .

  • Clear your calendar for that day.

  • Buy the tickets?

  • How many?

  • Who will go with you?

  • What will you do before the show?

  • How will you get there?

  • If you have kids, who will babysit?

  • Etc . . .

Buying and/or selling a house is a PROCESS consisting of myriad moving parts and people.

It all begins with the spark of an urge to move . . . This is the MOTIVATION that provides the emotional fuel to launch the process (Hire a REALTOR) and stay with it through thick and thin until the EVENT of the closing.

The first step requires more definition of this motivation and clarity of vision as to where you’re going. In your ultimate scenario:

  • Where will you move?

  • When will you move?

  • Describe the House or Condominium you will buy?

  • How will you find it?

  • How will you pay for it?

  • If you must sell a house before being able to buy the next one, how will you do that smoothly without having to move twice?

  • Who will you engage to guide you through the process?

There are specific things to be done in a well-defined sequenced per the contract
